8.24.11 – arroyo burro trail to the water tank

I got out for a quick, short hike this past Wednesday with my new coworkers at REI Santa Barbara. We hiked up part of the Jesusita Trail and over to the Arroyo Burro Trail. It was a pretty interesting hike and my first real hike in Santa Barbara since moving here a week ago. We took San Roque Road north of Foothill Blvd a couple blocks, to a very obvious trailhead. The trail rolls gently along some shaded and wooded terrain. Within the first half mile, we crossed a small stream twice with ease. The trail began to ascend more rigorously after that and especially began climbing after we reached a t-junction in the trail. We followed the Arroyo Burro trail up to a road. From here, the trail went along the road, then became a trail again, and then became a road again…before ascending steeply and finally becoming a foot-trail for the last half mile. Parts of the trail were very, very steep, but plenty doable. Our journey culminated at a water tank atop a very exposed hill that was covered in fire ants. The trail continued on but the trail became very overgrown and dropped steeply into another canyon. We decided to call it a day at the water tank, where we enjoyed the beautiful views of Santa Barbara and the not so distant Channel Islands.

  1. Arroyo Burro’s a really good hike — we did the up and over (from First Crossing to the Cater Plant) during the December rains last year; awesome stuff.
