Perhaps it’s the fact that I’ll be married in 21 days. 3 weeks. Or perhaps its a rare burst of energy for a 30 year old. Whatever the case, I got out for my third hike this week of 10+ miles. (gives pat on back)
I hoped to summit Mt. Wilson today via Chantry/The Upper Winter Creek Trail but was really up against the clock. Basically, I had to do 14 miles (7 up, 7 down) in 4:30:00. The goal sounded realistic at first, but…who are we kidding? I’m a pretty slow hiker. So instead, I decided to focus in on reaching Manzanita Ridge at a good time.
I’ve done this trail a few times and each time I hike it, I like it more. The first three miles are chill. Wooded. Quiet. However, after that, a pretty steep ascent begins. For 2 miles, one basically ascends 1700 feet until reaching a nice little saddle at Manzanita Ridge. If I would have been going faster, I could have gone 2 miles past Manzanita Ridge and summitted…but like I said, I had to go to work and was up against the clock. I summitted M.R. after 1:53:00 and finished the round trip in 3:45:00 or so. Not bad for my all-too-slow hiking pace.
A couple observations:
-My Quest 4d boots from Salomon rule. Had it not been for my darn ingrown toenail, I would have been able to go faster, largely because of their great traction and GoreTex (I would just run through the water crossings).
-The bees are out! Manzanita Ridge has a bench that looks nice to rest on…but is always inundated with bees that are often aggressive. Knowing this, I decided to have my short rest in the shade 20 feet from the bench and I was happier because of that!
-I saw only a handful of people past Hoegees camp. Light traffic today.
